Psychoanalysis and the Sociopolitical World, October 25, 2024 4-6PM with Sarah Jenkins (2CE's)
Trainer: Sarah Blair Jenkins MSW, LCSW, CST
Date: October 25, 2024
Psychoanalysis and the Sociopolitical World is a course geared towards clinicians with varying levels of exposure and experience with psychoanalytic theory. Participants will read three articles prior to the course to prepare for a robust and informative discussion of how psychoanalytic theory can help us make sense of our sociopolitical world, historically and currently plagued by violence to self, other, and even our planet. The central reading to unpack is an essay by Katie Gentile on the intersection of abortion policy, climate change, and anti-Blackness, all through a psychoanalytic lens. Other readings will include a more practice-oriented paper by Tara Lasheeen and Mamta Dadlani as well as a blogpost critiquing the psychoanalytic establishment by Carter Carter. This course will touch on some of the big "isms" (ie racism, sexism, ableism, etc.) and participants will leave with a deeper knowledge of how theory can help to make more meaning out of seemingly senseless social violence and hopefully move towards a more liberatory practice and livelihood. The main takeaways for participants include not only how the sociopolitical world shapes our work with clients, but how the ways we think about and work with our clients (in this case, psychodynamically and psychoanalytically) shapes our sociopolitical world.
