Over the course of this three hour offering, participants will think together on how various models of consent can be applied psychodynamically, related to both patient content, the treatment frame, and the world at large. Drawing on Avgi Saketoupolou's concept of limit consent and Kai Cheng Thom's spectrum of consent (among other models of consent), we will think through how to navigate issues of power and boundaries in the therapeutic relationship, including our professional obligations to our patients, the role of the therapist in the patient's life, and even how we write our intake paperwork. Participants are encouraged to bring deidentified case material for discussion, and relevant readings will be provided before the training. Attention will be paid to how consent is negotiated in the world outside the consulting room, including how consent is framed in current and historical sociocultural and sexual discourses. It is likely that participants will leave with more questions than answers, however will hopefully have a more solid base from which to grapple with the complexity of consent.
